Ski Vacation in the Savoie region (the French Alps)

If you are looking for the best ski vacation, consider the area of Les Trois Vallees (the three valleys), which is in the Savoie region in the French Alps. The combined skiing area of these interconnected resorts is so large that after coming here for some twenty years, I have not been able to cover every run they have and every time I am surprised to come across a place I had not been to before.

We choose to stay in Courchevel 1850 (the town is spread over a few “layers” – on various heights) – which is the pinnacle of Les Trois Vallees. The other main possibilities are Meribel and Val Thorens.

This year we stayed at a boutique hotel called Le Chabichou, situated right in the town of Courchevel, but offering “ski in/ ski out”. This, as every experienced skier will tell you, is the essence of quality skiing.

Our choice proved to be a great success: the staff is very friendly and helpful; the rooms are well appointed and offer all the amenities; the hotel has two restaurants – the one bearing the same name is a gourmet restaurant boasting two Michelin guide stars; it has a fabulous SPA that has been added more recently and it offers live entertainment a few nights a week. What else do you need to make your ski vacation complete?

On the mountain there are many options for lunch or a drink. One unique place, which is known for its loud music and fun atmosphere is called La Folie Douce in Meribel (there are a few locations by that name ). As we came to this resort late in the season (second week of April), we were able to experience the end of the season party which had a “Brazil” theme. It was quite an experience, with great music, dancers and singers and a few other gimmicks.
